Pre-Ordering Items
When you use the iTunes store to view an item that hasn't been released yet, the normal 'Buy' button instead reads 'Pre-Order.' Itunes will not charge you right away for the item. Instead, you'll get an email confirmation when the item is released. Upon actually downloading the item, you'll be charged for your purchase. Once the item is available, either click the link in Apple's email regarding the item, or open iTunes and go to 'Store' and 'Check for Available Downloads.'

While you're not charged for the entire item when you pre-order it, you still might see a charge. If any portion of the item is already available for download, iTunes treats the pre-order like a purchase and charges you for the currently available content, which you then have access to. For example, if you ordered an album from your favorite music artist, the album's first single may already be available. If so, you'll get charged for and gain access to that single, even though the rest of the album hasn't been released. You can download the remainder of the album once iTunes officially releases it.
Release Date
Apple warns that you might not have access to your pre-ordered content 'the exact moment it becomes available for regular purchase.' For pre-orders, you have to wait for Apple's email telling you the item is ready. Apple does assure that the email will come the same day the content is released. If getting your content the second it comes out is that important to you, consider foregoing the pre-order route. Instead, keep track of the release date and visit the iTunes store when the item becomes available.

Cancel Pre-Orders
If the item's release date is approaching and you've decided you don't want the content, you can cancel pre-orders. While purchased content on iTunes cannot be refunded, iTunes doesn't charge you for pre-orders until they're released, so you technically haven't purchased the content yet. To cancel a pre-order, click 'Store' in iTunes' menu bar and select 'View My Apple ID.' From there, select 'Manage Pre-Orders,' where you can check the release date for upcoming items or cancel the pre-order. Keep in mind that since all purchases are final, if a portion of the pre-order was available and already downloaded, you cannot return that content for a refund.
The download manager requires administrator privileges. After installing (and checking for new updates), sign off the admin account and run from your user account (for security). If you were provided the administrator password, use the method shown above to access the admin account - sign in there, then update/install. If you do not have the administrator password, you will not be able to add/install/update programs at all.
